Truffle hunting experience with tasting in Ocenilla, Soria

An experience that begins with your sense of smell.

Immerse yourself in the world of truffles in Ocenilla, Soria. A three-hour activity to discover the secrets of the black truffle and head out into the countryside to hunt for this underground treasure with the help of trained animals.

You’ll round off the experience by tantalising your taste buds with a tasting of three different truffle-topped toasts and a glass of wine or cava.

What we will do

We’ll meet about 5 minutes before the start of the experience at the meeting point in Ocenilla, Soria. Expert guides specialising in professional truffle farming will welcome us at a farm situated at the foot of the Sierra de Cabrejas, very close to one of the largest juniper groves in Europe.

We’ll then head straight to the holm oak nursery for an informative talk lasting between 30 and 45 minutes. We’ll discover how the black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) is produced, its varieties and the organoleptic characteristics that make it a gastronomic treasure.

And before we set off in search of truffles in the countryside, we’ll be able to take a short stroll around the farm, home to alpacas, geese, hens, pygmy goats and a peacock… And Bulla the piglet, who , if possible, will accompany us for the rest of the experience so that we can learn about a different and very specific method of truffle harvesting.

If this isn’t possible, there will always be the truffle-hunting dogs, as the farm has several of them. We’ll walk about 800 metres up a gentle slope to the harvesting site, where we’ll track, detect and unearth the truffles with the help of the trained animals. All this takes place in a unique setting of ash trees, oaks, pines and, above all, holm oaks, where truffles are most commonly found.

To round off the activity in style, we’ll enjoy a tasting featuring three types of toast, such as truffle-infused foie gras or truffle-topped quail’s egg, accompanied by a glass of wine or cava. It will be the perfect opportunity to learn how to make the most of the truffles we’ve harvested, which we’ll also be able to buy so we can continue to enjoy their aroma in our home-cooked meals.

The experience will last approximately 3 hours in total.

Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

This experience is not suitable for people with severe mobility impairments or those in wheelchairs.

Other information

The truffle season for this experience runs roughly from December to March, or until the harvest is exhausted. The activity is confirmed once a minimum group of 4 participants has been reached.

There is free parking on the estate. It is not possible to reach the area by public transport; the village centre is about a 10-minute walk away (uphill) .
