Full description
No, I’m not joking: a new volcano has erupted in the Canary Islands.
It’s time to break out of your routine and dare to experience the unbridled power of nature in a landscape that has been completely transformed. Enjoy a 5-hour guided hike to the Tajogaite volcano crater on La Palma. Walk for almost 8 km through volcanic ash, marvel at its impressive craters and round off the day with a picnic of Canarian specialities and local wine at sunset, set against unforgettable views.
What we will do
We’ll meet 15 minutes before the scheduled time at the meeting point in El Paso, La Palma. There, our guide will welcome us and we’ll begin the experience by watching an exclusive 6-minute video about the 2021 eruption to understand the origins of this new landscape. We’ll then board the shared minibus for a journey of around 20 minutes to Llanos del Jable, where the trail begins.
We’ll start the walk by skirting the historic Tacande volcano (or Montaña Quemada) and venturing into the fascinating ash-covered terrain. We’ll walk along a circular route of almost 8 km with an elevation gain of 300 metres until we reach the closest point permitted to the Tajogaite volcano’s cone . During the walk, we’ll observe its two craters and get a close-up view of the impressive shaping force that created Europe’s youngest land.
After completing the trail, we’ll get back into the vehicle for a short 3-minute drive to the Llanos del Jable Astronomical Viewpoint (or an alternative location depending on the weather) . There, we’ll settle in to watch the sunset with the best views of the volcano, whilst enjoying a picnic with local wine ( white or red) , juices and typical Canarian specialities such as mojo sauce with picos, nuts, dates, figs and meringues.
Once we’ve watched the sunset and finished our snacks, we’ll set off back by minibus to El Paso, bringing this comprehensive excursion – lasting around 5 hours (including preparations) – to a close .
