Photography tour and flamingo spotting at sunset in the Ebro Delta

If you thought flamingos were born pink like a fairground soft toy, we’re sorry to burst your bubble: they’re born grey, and their colour comes purely from feasting on seafood.

On this two-and-a-half-hour excursion in Tarragona, you’ll explore the incredible Riet Vell Nature Reserve with an expert guide, spot flocks of flamingos at the Tancada lagoon and round off the day by photographing the sunset at the Trabucador sandbar.

What we will do

We’ll meet at the designated meeting point at the Riet Vell Nature Reserve in Tarragona. There , our guide will welcome us, hand out the binoculars and go over the route before we set off.

We’ll begin the walk by heading into the heart of the reserve to visit an organic rice farm situated next to a hidden lagoon. From the birdwatching hide, we’ll make the most of the first golden glimmers of the afternoon to adjust the focus, sharpen our vision through the binoculars and, if we wish, photograph the flight of the various species that inhabit this protected environment.

We’ll then return to the starting point to get into our own cars and drive to the Tancada lagoon. There, we’ll make a strategic stop to admire the stars of the day: the flamingos. Whilst we watch them feeding in large colonies, the guide will reveal some surprising secrets, such as why they aren’t born pink, how they manage to rest on a single leg, or why their joints seem to bend backwards.

With our memory cards full of great photos, we’ll continue by car to Trabucador Beach. On this narrow strip of sand, we’ll walk between the Mediterranean Sea and Alfaques Bay whilst the sky and water are bathed in shades of orange and scarlet. We’ll bring our two-and-a-half-hour tour to a close by bidding farewell to the setting sun amidst this unique natural spectacle.

Who it is aimed at

This experience is suitable for everyone, with no minimum age. Ideal for families, photography enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Minors must always be accompanied by a responsible adult.

People in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility can take part in the activity without any problems, as the route is on flat ground; however, it is essential to give a few days’ notice so that we can organise the logistics.

Pets are not permitted to ensure the peace and protection of wildlife.

Other information

Available at weekends, with opening times that vary throughout the year depending on the exact time of sunset (with greater availability during the summer season and closed over the Christmas period) .

You will need to check and confirm the exact time with the organisers at least 24 hours before the activity.

The activity takes place in a shared group, with a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 20 participants (with 1 guide allocated for every 10 people) .

There is free, unrestricted parking at the starting point in the Riet Vell Nature Reserve.

Important: You must bring your own vehicle, as during the tour we will be travelling by car between Riet Vell, the Tancada lagoon and the Trabucador.

There is no frequent public transport to the meeting point.
