Full description
Did you know that there is a species of horse that has never been domesticated by humans?
On this 3. 5-hour guided walking tour through the Upper Tagus, we’ll venture into the territory of the Przewalski’s horse – the only truly wild horse on the planet – to admire its beauty in the wild and understand its important ecological role.
What we will do
We’ll meet 10 minutes before the booked time at the meeting point at the entrance to the village of Peñalén, the gateway to the natural beauty of the Alto Tajo. After a brief introduction to the itinerary, we’ll set off on foot into the reserve managed by the Rewilding Spain initiative .
During the walk, we’ll explore the area, learning about the history of the landscape and keeping an eye out for these animals in the wild. As this is a wild species that lives without direct interaction with humans, we’ll learn to track their footprints and signs in their natural environment. Once spotted, we will observe them from a respectful distance so as not to interfere with their behaviour. Our guide will explain fascinating details about the biology of the Przewalski’s horse — the only horse in the world that retains its purely wild genetics — and about the challenges of its conservation.
Throughout the walk, we will also come to understand the importance of these large herbivores in fire prevention and the regeneration of the area’s ecosystems. We’ll bring this enriching adventure to a close after around 3. 5 hours of exploring and learning on foot, returning to the starting point having discovered a unique wild corner of the Upper Tagus.
