What we will do
We will meet 10 minutes before the agreed time at the meeting point in Arenas de Cabrales, where we will be met by the guides and the 4x4 vehicles that will accompany us on this half-day route through the Picos de Europa. After a brief presentation, we will start the route ascending the Duje river valley towards Sotres, one of the most emblematic villages in these mountains.
From there we will take a mountain road that will take us through the Vega de Sotres, where we will see the traditional winter huts used by shepherds to shelter their livestock. We will continue to the natural border between Asturias and Cantabria, a place where the landscape changes in an evident way, and we will continue towards the historic Chalet Real de Áliva, known for having lodged Alfonso XIII at the beginning of the 20th century.
On this stretch we will enjoy spectacular views of Peña Vieja, pass by the Chapel of the Virgen de las Nieves and see herds of sheep and goats grazing freely. We will then start the descent towards Espinama, crossing a beautiful beech forest and the Igüedri winter pastures, to continue to the base of the Fuente Dé cable car.
On the way back to Arenas de Cabrales we will go through the Hermida Gorge, passing through the charming medieval village of Potes. Throughout the journey, the guide will be explaining interesting facts about the geology, flora, fauna and customs of these valleys.
In total, we will experience 4 hours of nature, history and breathtaking landscapes, on an accessible route full of panoramic stops in the heart of the Picos de Europa.
