Full description

Can you imagine seeing dozens of griffon vultures gliding just a few metres away from you whilst they feed in the heart of the wilderness?

On this 4-hour tour through the Tajo Canyon, we’ll explore the Peñalén mountain range with an ornithological guide, spotting large birds of prey in their natural habitat and experiencing the thrill of a controlled feeding from a hide.

What we will do

We’ll meet 10 minutes before the booked time at the entrance to the village of Peñalén, our meeting point for entering the Alto Tajo Natural Park. After being introduced to our expert ornithology guide, we’ll head to a natural viewpoint overlooking the canyon. There, we’ll have an introductory talk about scavenger birds, their biology and the vital role they play in the area’s ecosystems.

We’ll then set off on a walking tour lasting approximately two hours along the River Tajo to observe the vultures’ behaviour as closely as possible. We’ll walk beneath the imposing rocky cliffs, equipped with telescopes and binoculars, learning to identify the different species soaring through the sky, such as the griffon vulture, the Egyptian vulture and birds from the black vulture reintroduction projects.

After returning to the viewing point, we’ll travel by vehicle to a hide. We will settle inside for 30 minutes to an hour whilst a controlled feeding takes place. From the concealment of the hide, we will witness the vultures descending to feed, offering us a perfect opportunity to observe their social behaviour and take photographs.

We’ll round off the activity by returning to the starting point after around 4 hours of birdwatching in the Alto Tajo.
