Introductory canyoning in the Navedo Gorge in Cantabria

Who needs an amusement park when nature has carved its own water slides out of the rocks?

In the Navedo Gorge, situated in the La Hermida Gorge and right in the heart of the Picos de Europa, a thrilling introductory canyoning experience lasting a total of 4 hours awaits you. Guided by qualified instructors, you’ll spend around two hours in the water , tackling abseils of up to 22 metres, natural slides and thrilling optional jumps of up to 6 metres in height. A refreshing and dynamic activity that includes all equipment and a complimentary photo report.

What we will do

Please arrive 15 minutes before the specified time at the meeting point in San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria (or directly at the foot of the gorge if this has been arranged in advance) . The team of guides will be waiting for us there; we’ll get changed and be issued with the essential safety equipment: a wetsuit and neoprene socks, a helmet and a harness.

After a brief briefing on the rules for moving through the water, we’ll get into the vehicles for the 40-minute journey to the La Hermida Gorge. Once at the starting point, we’ll set off on a 15-minute walk to reach the head of the Navedo riverbed.

This is where the water adventure begins! During our roughly 2-hour journey down the riverbed, we’ll leave the daily grind behind as we navigate the fun mountain obstacles. We’ll tackle two rope abseils (one 7 metres long and a spectacular 22-metre descent) , slide down natural water chutes and enjoy several jumps into the water (from heights of up to 6 metres) , all of which are optional so we can adapt to the group’s pace.

Once out of the water, we’ll take a leisurely 5-minute walk back to the vehicles. We’ll return to base, where we can use the changing rooms to shower and get changed in comfort.

The activity will last approximately 4 hours in total (including preparations, transfer and time spent in the gorge) .

Who it is aimed at

Ideal both for those trying canyoning for the first time and for those looking to repeat the experience without increasing the technical difficulty.

The activity is suitable for those aged 10 and over; minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult .

You must be able to swim.

A fear of heights or vertigo is not a hindrance, as all obstacles are optional.

The maximum weight limit is approximately 110 kg.

This activity is not suitable for pregnant women or people with reduced mobility.

Pets are not allowed.

Other information

The main meeting point is at the base in San Vicente de la Barquera. Alternatively, you can go directly to the ravine, but you must arrange the location with the organisers in advance.

The experience takes place on the following dates:

• From 1 March to 31 May: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 09: 30 and 15: 30.
• From 1 June to 30 September: Every day at 09. 15 and 15. 15.
• From 1 October to 31 October: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 09: 30.

A minimum of 2 participants is required to confirm the activity, and there is a maximum of 14 people per group (a special rate applies for groups of 8 or more) .

There is free and paid parking in the immediate vicinity. We do not recommend using public transport to get to the meeting point.

Recommended clothing

• Swimwear and a change of clothes
• Appropriate footwear for the activity (trainers or waterproof walking boots)
