Full description

We are muleteers. .. and we will meet on the banks of the Segura.

Enjoy and learn with an educational trekking route with donkeys in Abarán, the heart of the Ricote Valley. For about 3 hours, walk along the route of the waterwheels, discovering the environment and its history while you learn to guide these noble animals like a real muleteer.

It's time to slow down and connect with the roots of Murcia.

What we will do

We will arrive punctually at the meeting point in Abarán, the gateway to the Ricote Valley, where we will be met by two muleteer guides. After a brief introduction on the historical importance of the donkey in traditional agriculture, it's time for introductions: we will meet our companions, with names as friendly as Frodo or Gandalf (the project has more than 15 donkeys! ).

We will learn the basic techniques to handle and guide them with respect and we will be ready to start a simple and very accessible hiking route. We will enjoy the environment of the banks of the Segura river, walking along the same paths that muleteers walked for centuries with these same animals, which today walk without heavy loads.

We will stop to interpret the landscape of the riverside forest, the irrigation ditches and weirs, and we will discover the traditional irrigation waterwheels, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. These hydraulic systems still work today as they did hundreds of years ago.

The little ones will have the opportunity to ride one of the donkeys, while the adults enjoy the slow pace set by the animal. We will take advantage of the didactic stops to learn more about the conservation of this species and its link with the cultural legacy of Murcia.

We will conclude this trip after about 3 hours of activity.
