Introductory caving and abseiling at El Nazal Cave in Cantabria

If you think you’ve seen it all on the surface, it’s high time you ventured into the depths of the earth and discovered a world as fascinating as it is profound.

At El Nazal Cave, located in Pechón, Cantabria, a beginner’s caving experience awaits you , lasting a total of 3. 5 hours (including 2. 5 hours of underground exploration) . Accompanied at all times by a qualified guide, you’ll explore impressive galleries, wind your way through narrow passages, abseil down a thrilling 12-metre drop and admire the famous blue flags that make this place a unique gem.

What we will do

We’ll meet 15 minutes before the scheduled time at the meeting point in San Vicente de la Barquera, in Cantabria. A qualified guide will be waiting for us there to accompany us on the adventure and provide us with all the safety equipment (helmet, head torch, wetsuit and gloves) . After a brief briefing where we’ll learn the basics of navigating underground, we’ll adjust our torches and board the van for an exciting 15-minute journey to Pechón, where the entrance to El Nazal Cave is hidden.

We’ll cross the threshold into the most impressive three-dimensional cavern in the area, marvelling at its imposing galleries, which are up to 20 metres high and 15 metres wide, where the echoes and the vastness of the rock will welcome us.

We’ll switch on our headlamps and the real underground adventure will begin! For 2. 5 hours in the heart of the Earth, we’ll explore the upper and lower levels of the cave along a 200-metre route. We’ll wind our way through fun crawl spaces and narrow passages that will put our agility to the test, and we’ll feel a real adrenaline rush as we tackle a thrilling 12-metre abseil in the dim light. With every step, our torches will illuminate a unique natural museum: gigantic flowstones, stalactites, stalagmites and the magical blue flags, sculpted over millennia by copper oxide and calcium carbonate.

After completing this fascinating journey and emerging back into the light of day, we’ll set off on the return journey to base camp. There, we’ll be able to use the changing rooms to get changed in comfort and celebrate our achievement.

The activity will last approximately 3. 5 hours in total (including preparations) .

Who it is aimed at

This is a beginner-level activity, ideal for those venturing into the underground world for the first time or for those who wish to repeat the experience without increasing the technical difficulty.

The activity is suitable for those aged 9 and over; minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult .

Although there are narrow sections and crawls, these can be easily navigated without any prior experience.

It is not suitable for pregnant women or people with reduced mobility.

You do not need to be able to swim, as the route is 100% dry.

Pets are not allowed.

Other information

The experience is available on the following dates:

• From 1 March to 31 May: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 10. 00 am and 4. 00 pm.
• From 1 June to 30 November: Every day at 10. 00 am and 4. 00 pm.

A minimum of 2 participants is required to confirm the activity, and there is a maximum of 12 people per group (a special rate applies for groups of 8 or more) .

There is free and paid parking in the immediate vicinity. We do not recommend using public transport to get to the meeting point.

• Comfortable clothing to wear under the protective jacket
