Full description

Have you ever seen a truffle-hunting dog track down gastronomy’s ‘black diamond’ underground?

On this two-hour experience in the Serranía de Cuenca, Alto Tajo or the Sierra de Albarracín, we’ll join a professional truffle hunter and their four-legged friends as they search for this coveted fungus. We’ll learn the secrets of truffle farming and sample this delicacy fresh from the ground.

What we will do

We’ll meet 10 minutes before the booked time at the meeting point, which, depending on the weather , could be in the Serranía de Cuenca, Alto Tajo or the Sierra de Albarracín. There we’ll be welcomed by our host, a passionate local truffle hunter, alongside his ever-present truffle-hunting dogs – the real stars of the day.

Accompanied by them, we’ll head into the truffle plantation to get down to work. As we walk amongst the holm oaks, the guide will reveal a wealth of fascinating facts about the black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) , from how its price fluctuates weekly at the market to the secrets surrounding its underground cultivation. Very soon, the highlight of the day will arrive: we’ll watch the dogs mark the ground with their prodigious sense of smell and observe the traditional technique used to extract this prized fungus with the utmost care.

To round off the morning on a high note, we’ll enjoy a small tasting of freshly harvested black truffles, served on a slice of toast drizzled with olive oil. This brings to a close our two-hour session of learning and truffle hunting in the heart of the countryside.
