Full description
Ready to bring out your detective side and follow the trail of birds as if you were filming your own National Geographic documentary?
In 4 hours you will walk around the Covadonga Lakes with a guide from the Picos de Europa National Park, looking for bearded vultures, eagles, small migratory birds and lots of wildlife in a unique glacial landscape.
What we will do
We will meet 10 minutes before the agreed time at the meeting point in Cangas de Onís, Asturias. Our National Park guide will meet us there and we will get into the vehicle that we will use during the whole activity.
We will head towards the Covadonga Lakes, one of the most emblematic areas of the Picos de Europa National Park. As we ascend, we will learn how the glaciers shaped its plains, how the shepherds worked and how the famous Gamonéu cheese is made.
Once in the area, we will start searching for wildlife. With the help of the binoculars and telescopes provided, we will try to observe species such as the bearded vulture, known to be the only living animal that specialises in feeding almost exclusively on bones, the golden eagle, the griffon vulture and other resident or migratory birds.
We will take a short walk along the Ercina lake, ideal for observing small birds such as the stonechat, the wheatear or the red-breasted rock thrush, which travel from Africa to breed in these mountains. Throughout the activity we will learn about the functioning of the ecosystem, wildlife curiosities and how this unique environment is protected, always taking care to minimise the impact on the species and the park.
We will finish after approximately 4 hours of experience returning to the meeting point in Cangas de Onís.
